Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages What the job entails: Teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) help people learn how to speak, read, and write English. They work in the UK and abroad. TESOL teachers work with people who want to learn English for all sorts of different reasons. They may be adults who need to use English in their work. They may be groups of teenagers, who come to the UK to do a short course on improving their English. Some people they teach may already be living in the UK, but do not have English as their first language. Routes and choices while at school: You will need a good general education if you want to be a TESOL teacher. Many people who go into this work have a degree. The first thing to do is to get a range of GCSEs at grades C or 5 or better, or equivalent. English is particularly important but you will need maths, too, for some courses. One or more modern foreign languages would be very useful. Pay: Pay when starting is about £14,000 to £18,000 per year. When experienced, it is about £17,000 to £25,000. For experts with a lot of experience, pay can rise to £30,000 or more.
